Dear Roger and Nidhi,

The very last page of the ppt on 'Good qualitative research - examples from workshop feedback' is listing the distinctive aspects of qualitative research, often by contrast with the quantitative approach. I agree with all the claims in favour of the qualitative methods except that the claim in the very last point needs clearer expression. As it stands, it claims that the qualitative approach produces "More authentic information than in quantitative". Whether and to what extent it is more authentic depends on the purpose to which that data is put. Moreover, to be informative and more balanced, it is also right to point out its limitations vis a vis the quantitative approach. In particular that qualitative data - typically gathered from small smaples - does not permit the researcher to generalise findings to the population as a whole, which limits its potential to answer some important research questions and to inform policy.
